I am Dr. Kayme Henkel, I teach and perform in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin. I began dabbling in teaching as a high school student and then began to REALLY learn how to teach as part of my Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from The University of Central Missouri. I was hooked and continued to get a Master of Music degree in performance from Kent State and then a Doctorate of Music with emphasis in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. My studies there were with Jessica Johnson and Martha Fischer, both amazing advisers who I cannot give enough credit to for the enjoyment and employment I now have.
I teach about 100 students a week between two schools and my private studio, do some freelance performing when possible, mother my three children and support my husband who is a microbiologist teaching at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
My degrees in piano pedagogy were not only in learning how to teach piano to young children, but also in how to teach young teachers beginning their careers as teachers and help pianists develop and communicate technical aspects of performing at the instrument. Lately I have been fielding a lot of questions from colleagues and friends on repertoire, teaching ideas and practicing. This blog is a way for me to share some of my thoughts and also keep a record of some of my repertoire research for my own personal reference.
